The APIQWTC Scholarship supports queer API women and transgender people in their pursuit of technical / professional training or higher education. The scholarship hopes to recognize those who are active in the community and encourage future leaders. The scholarship fund is strictly segregated from the APIQWTC general operating fund. Helen Zia
Helen Zia is an award-winning journalist and scholar who has covered Asian American communities and social and political movements for decades. She is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the prestigious Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize.
Helen has been outspoken on issues ranging from civil rights and peace to women’s rights and countering hate violence and homophobia. More recently, she was one of the 2008 Summer Olympic torch runners and has been part of the fight to defend her love and marriage to her long-time partner, Lia Shigemura, against Prop 8.

Debbie Chang was born in Nagano, Japan. Adopted by Chinese-Americans at a young age, she was raised in Sacramento, California. Growing up she always had a love for the arts whether through performance, illustration, or story telling. She first began performing as a drag king in 2006 under the name “Mr Wu Her.” Wu was a member of the Sacramento-based group, “The Slickk Bois”, who went on to win the title for best drag troupe at San Fransisco’s 11th annual drag king competition. Although the Slickk Bois soon after disbanded, Debbie remains performing thought-provoking and avant garde drag to this day for a plethora of different events and causes. Wu is honored to be present at this yearʼs APIQWTC Lunar New Year Banquet 2009. -Back to Top-
Jamaesori (“Sister Sound”)
Jamaesori (”Sister Sound”) is a group of women and transgender people of Korean descent who use traditional Korean drumming to support social justice movements. We are an intergenerational group of Korean-Americans, Korean adoptees, hapas and Korean nationals who identify as community activists and artists. Jamaesori uses Pilbong style Pungmul, a participatory folk art tradition, to coalesce around the expression of communal hopes and to overcome sorrow and hardship. Since being founded in 1991, Jamaesori has taken inspiration from the spirit of Pungmul and contributed to the vitality of our community by participating in numerous events, celebrations and protests. We play to recognize our culture, to honor our history and to rally in shaping our future. -Back to Top-

With support from Gay Asian Pacific Alliance, GAPA Dance Company was founded in 1990 to provide a nurturing artistic environment for queer Asian & Pacific Islander dancers and choreographers. The Dance Company is co-gender and its dance repertoire has featured a varied number of dance styles, including hip hop, modern, traditional ethnic, and fusion. In addition to producing its own repertory programs, performances have included appearances at the United States of Asian America Festival, the National Queer Arts Festival, APAture, San Francisco’s Gay Pride Celebration, East Bay Pride, and GAPA’s Runway Pageant. -Back to Top-
